Some great summer makeup suggestions :

There′s nothing worse than feeling a slight sting in your eye on a hot August day, and realizing your recently-applied makeup has just slid down your sweaty forehead and slicked itself upon your cornea. The physical feeling is unpleasant enough, and the knowledge your foundation is falling in streaks adds a layer of embarrassment that no eye drop can whisk away.

There are roughly 2.6 million sweat glands nestled into the dermis, and it′s the eccrine variety (highly concentrated on the forehead, palms and the soles of the feet), that are responsible for glistening the brow. And while perspiring means your body′s cooling system is simply doing a good job—and we all do it—I can′t help but think that when I′m enjoying a romantic picnic on a muggy summer eve, my date isn′t going to gaze at the salty drop careening down my temple and sigh, %26quot;Ah, what properly working sweat glands you have, my dear.%26quot;

Obviously, you can′t (and don′t want to) stop the face from sweating, but you can alter your summer skincare and makeup regimens to minimize the potentially messy paste of perspiration mixed with pressed powder. We all know the cosmetics general rule: The best ′applied′ beauty is that which matches your tone and blends in in such a way that your flaws are subtly concealed-- and your assets subtly enhanced. The summer months may require a change in regimen, but there are plenty of products that can keep your pores clean and keep you looking fresh-faced.

First of all, now is the obvious time to go for the self-tanners. Not just because it′ll be assumed your bronze appearance comes from a beach (not a bottle), but because a tan conceals many a skin imperfection, and when hot days keep you from heavy makeup—what′s better than an even complexion that you can′t possibly sweat off? Go for California North Titanium Self Tanner - 8 oz bottle; it not only provides a natural-looking color, but it′s a thinner lotion than many of the oil-based tanners, and thus feels wonderfully light and moisturizing when applied after a cool shower on a hot night. For face, I like Peter Thomas Roth Natural Looking Self-Tanner, because it′s light and is also odorless-- which is paramount for a lotion I′m applying around (and under) my nose. I′ve tried all the ′mousse′ tanners, and though they initially feel light and certainly spread well (definite easy coverage), they end up leaving skin feeling slightly tacky; a feeling I abhor when the temperature threatens to have clothing stick to your skin with or without the help of a product that effectively acts like a Glue Stick.

Summertime is when I splurge on makeup pre-application products; there′s nothing like feeling the clean tingle of a good toner after a good facial scrub (California North Gelskin Scrub works on the face as well as the body, just be sure to be more gentle and use a lighter touch on the face than you do elsewhere). During the winter I′m a fan of Peter Thomas Roth Oxygen Mist, but in summer I reach for either B. Kamins Bio-Maple Hydrogen-Ion Moisturizing Toner for Normal or Combination Skin which is actually available in other formulations to suite every skin type) or SkinCeuticals Equalizing Toner. The latter works best on oily or combination skin, and restores skin’s protective pH as it removes the dead skin, sweat, and oily residues I seem to collect in the heat. I like the way the witch hazel and rosemary make my skin feel cleaner than ever, and love the knowledge that its aloe and chamomile aren′t stripping away any of the protective properties the skin needs year round.

When it comes to marrying makeup with the rise in the thermometer′s mercury, I tend to go light, and always slather on the SPF. MD Skincare All-In-One Tinted Moisturizer Sunscreen SPF 15 is sheer enough that it doesn′t feel like a layer of painted-on makeup, yet still carries that SPF, as well as a tint that nicely evens out a slightly multi-toned complexion.

I also like MD Formulations Total Protector Color 30. Which gives the skin a natural radiant glow while protecting against environmental skin aging (in a sheer-tinted, lightweight formula), with a light powder on top—like pressed powder foundations by T. LeClerc-- or any of the %26quot;matte%26quot; formulas that keep the shine at bay yet still provide a little color, like T. LeClerc Matte Fluid Foundation SPF 20 - Beige Mat or EI Solutions Tinted Primer (Bronze). Of course, by applying DERMAdoctor Tease Zone Oil Control Gel, one can go with or without make-up and never need worry about sporting an undesirable summertime “glow”.

A friend of mine gives tours of the historic gardens around Los Angeles and Pasadena, and says the only way to keep her %26quot;face in place%26quot; while detailing local cacti--in local 99-degree heat-- is by using self-tanner, wearing waterproof mascara, using DERMAdoctor Little Red Dress - Rejuvenating Chic Tint on both her cheeks and lips, and wearing %26quot;a floppy hat that′s so big it looks like a lampshade.%26quot;

Try a couple combos to see what works for your skin type, and if you must spend time outside and don′t want the ′applied beauty′ bother, go for the demure attitude and pretend you′re putting up with the heat because you′re summering with the Great Gatsby. Pull a Tweezerman Facial Blotting Paper from your clutch bag, skip the makeup touch-up, and daintily blot your brow as you quote Daisy Buchanan; %26quot;It′s too hot to fuss.%26quot;
