If fad diets are so unhealthy, why did my doctor reccomend the South Beach diet?

When I was about 12 years old or so [a few years ago], my doctor suggested weightloss. He reccomended that I tried the South Beach diet [you know, the one where you cut carbs out completely!] Why would he do this rather than educate me on healthy lifestyle changes?

Actually, from what I've read of the south beach diet, it doesn't suggest cutting carbs totally. It cuts out bad carbs and foods with a high %26quot;glycemic index%26quot;. I wouldn't really consider this a fad diet.

Fad diets are characterized by exaggerated claims of significant and quick weight loss and usually by unhealthy means.

I would put south beach diet underneath the %26quot;lifestyle change%26quot; category as it just encourages eating from healthier sources. It doesn't make exaggerated promises. And there is evidence that it works and is healthy too (something most fad diets aren't).

Actually, out of all the %26quot;diets%26quot; out there, this one is probably among the best. But really for weight loss, it all comes down to burning more calories than you consume. Although it is still important to get the right kind of nutrition from those calories, which is why diets like south beach are good.

just exercise

and youll be good to go

Is he a nutritionist? If not, look up studies and research everything for yourself. My doc tells me to not have more than 60 g of protein, more than 2 eggs a day will kill me, and carbs before bed make me auto-fat. =/, I'd stay away from sb diet if I were you, but it's better than most.
The South Beach is a more intelligent and safer diet than the Pritikin diet. And its a diet that you can live with forever. My character is too weak to follow any diet 100% of the time, so I sort of use my own diet, which I designed from many diets.
The South Beach Diet is actually a very healthy diet. For the first 2 weeks, you do severely limit carbs, but that is just to eliminate sugar and starch cravings.

During the next phase, you start adding in healthy carbs, such as fruits, low GI veggies, whole wheat bread, whole wheat pasta, brown rice, etc.

There are many so called %26quot;fad%26quot; diets that work quite well and are actually healthy.
